Notice : e.g. I
heard 'Smalltown Boy' in July 1984 on commercial FM radio and it immediately
caught my attention as a gay boy dealing with coming out. It was emotionally
honest and inspiring and gave me, and others, strength and hope that there
were other 'gay' voices out there. (corny but true) In retrospect, lyrically,
the song had an (obvious now) queer subtext, coded for 'queers' worldwide
and a political 'vibe' about it, like Jim. Too deep, maybe but up until then,
with a few commercial exceptions like 'Killing of Georgie' by (ewww) Rod
Stewart or 'At Seventeen' by Janis Ian although she was very broad in her
lyric content, nobody, actually directly addressed a point of queer
alienation with such emotional honesty combined with commercial success it
brought. Yeah, 'Smalltown' was positive and life affirming unlike the 'dead
victim' status of that Rod Stewart song. An important turning point in pop
music history universally as far as 'queer culture' is concerned. |
