Hannover/Germany, 24.Juli 1999 / EXPO-CAFE

On the 24th of July we went to the Soundcheck at 6 p.m. in the Expocafe.  There we were met with a very calm atmosphere. After Jimmy and I talked about the last concert in Freiburg, which both Jimmy and I agreed wasn´t his best -- he said, "as bad as a festival for children" -- I used the opportunity to throw in a few questions about the background singer. She told me that she would also be there for the next tour. Here Jimmy chimed in with his doubts, "I only go on tour with people and men under 25. Only they have the ability to keep up. Men over 25 can´t do that anymore." Matthew said in response, "I am just 19, right Gillian, I´m only 19." Gillian told me that she has worked with Jimmy for 3 years. Matthew, on the other hand, has worked for Jimmy for 5 years. In response to the question which song is the most difficult to sing, they answered, "actually none of them. It always depends on the sound. Sometimes you have to sing against the sound, and sometimes the voice simply goes along with it." But Gilllian did say that Never Can Say Goodbye is such a long song that she needs a lot of breath for it. Jimmz replied, "that´s only because she smokes too much." Gillian, "He lies! He lies!" Unfortunately I had to leave the three then, because they wanted to go eat. But later that evening was still the gig.

Jimmy Sommerville was a guest artist at the Red Salon, which occurs once a month in the Expocafe. Right at 1 a.m. he came on stage and started with the song "Why?". The approximately 300 people went right along with him. After that followed "Lay Down", "Don´t Leave Me This Way", "Someday Soon", and "Dark Sky". When they sang "Never Can Say Goodbye", I had to think about Gillian and her breath.  Actually though,I didn´t even notice a problem, and it was a great title. When Jimmy sang "Smalltown Boy" in a very slow version, the fans all sang along. After this was, unfortunately, the end. After the gig, we were able to exchange a few words with Jimmy and his background singers. For me it was an excellent evening that I won´t soon forget.
