London/UK - Pride in the Park 26. Juli 2003

Pride In The Park, the British - Mardi Gras, - Christopher Street Day or - Pride, had a lot going for it including an 8 hour open air live concert with such acts as Bananarama, Skin, Dead or Alive, Heather Small Soft Cell and Jimmy Somerville (Marc Almond & Jimmy singing the duet "I Feel Love" between their slots).  65,000 people visited the gay event of the year!
jimmy_somerville_marc_almond_londonAfter hearing that Jimmy Somerville will be performing at Pride In The Park, we thought a short weekend trip to London would be a very nice treat!  After booking flights and hotel rooms we were on our way, starting off from Hannover Airport on 25th July.  The sun was shining in Germany but unfortunately the good weather didn´t follow us to London!  When landing we looked out at a very wet runway and got quite wet going to our Earls Court Hotel!  We didn´t give up however hoping that the following day would be better!  jimmy_somerville_marc_almond_londonA quick visit to Solar-Management was on the agenda. We just wanted to be nice and drop by to say hello.

jimmy_somerville_marc_almond_live_londonOn the next day (26th July) the sun did shine, so we decided to do a little shopping and sightseeing.
After that we made our way to Hyde Park and it was impossible to miss the crowds that were making their way to the party and even more impossible to overhear them. As we got to the venue at around 3 p.m. it was filling up quite well.  60,000 people were expected on this day!
It was a well organized concert with each of the 20 acts performing for about 20 - 25 minutes.  The breaks in between were quite short making way for the next stars performance.  At each side of the stage you could see two large screens which made it possible for everyone to see what was going on on up there.  Someone was always on stage doing sign language.  As just said; well organised.

At about 9 p.m. (and just when it started to rain heavily) Jimmy came on stage.  He started off with "You Make Me Feel", then "Don't Leave Me This Way", "Could It Be Love" and "Smalltown Boy".  It was just as amazing as ever!. The fifth song was the new version of "I Feel Love" which Jimmy sung by himself at the beginning, then Marc Almond came out on stage completing the song with him in a duet!  To the roars of many fans Marc sang "Jimmy why don´t you remember me…?" instead of "Johnny, why…"  After this unique duet Soft Cell proceeded to perform.  Jimmy, Matthew and Gillian left for backstage.
After both gigs we tried to get a photo of Jimmy and Marc together however that wasn´t meant to be even though Jimmy tried his best to get Marc out of his dressing room.  Maybe next time!?  We decided to leave after a short conversation with Jimmy, primarily due to the rain getting heavier… so off we went happy (and quite wet) back to our hotel!  Thanks Jimmy for your time and a wonderful performance.
