I'm boarding an airplane to see Jimmy live with a band again at last. I was
able to experience the last gig with a band during the „Dare To Love“ tour
15 years ago. And I can definitely say it was worth travelling all the way
across the English Channel to the beautiful seaside resort Brighton in
England.
Jimmy,
Matthew and Gillian were enthusiastic and it you could clearly see this.
Right from the beginning this enthusiasm leapt over to the audience. The
hall was up on its feet when Jimmy started to sing „You Make Me Feel“. This
was followed by „Why?“ with the the brass band in the background making it
that more perfect. Jimmy introduced the next song with the words „A little
bit of disco never was wrong“ and together with the crowd he sang „Never can
Say Goodbye“.
After that there was a bit of reggae feeling with „To Love Somebody“.
This song is not one of my favourites but the live atmosphere and the sound
of the Here & Now band managed to give me the goose bumps. Within the first
beats of „Smalltown boy“ all hands were in the air again and the crowd in
Brighton showed how well they knew the lyrics.
Next thing up, Jimmy thanked the band and Matthew and Gillian although
having to think for a while until he remembered her name again. This of
course made the crowd laugh. Jimmy didn't seem too keen on the catering and
acknowledged this with the words „thank you to the catering....brrr gorgeous“
and made a gesture as if being sick.
„Don't Leave Me This Way“ was to follow and I couldn’t wait for the
special guest to get on stage, who by the way, was not so special any more
for some people since Sarah Jane Morris herself had posted on facebook: „Who
is coming to see me and Jimmy in Brighton?“. But where was she? Jimmy had
already begun to sing the song and Sarah was nowhere to be seen. At the end
of the first chorus, my goose bumps were back.
She rushed onto the stage in a gigantic white skirt and a red scarf. I was delighted! Not only did she look good but also her voice was amazing. Both of them were dancing as if 1986 had been only a year ago. There was an immediate harmony between them. The song ended and Jimmy and Sarah left the stage singing. The last chords were played by the band alone and I knew, for me, this journey had been all worth while.
The concert continued and I could hardly wait to see Boy George for the closing. He began with „Church Of The Poison Mind“ and I thought he could have done better. However it only seemed he had to warm up a little as afterwards he got better and better song by song. He finally captured me when he performed a jazzy version of the Elvis Presley classic „Always On My Mind”. Last song of the evening was „Get It On“ and suddenly I was in for a surprise.
Boy George called Jimmy onto the stage and they did a
duet together. The crowd was rocking again and the hall was on its feet
again. The backing vocals were performed by Sarah Jane Morris, Pepsie &
Shirlie, Matthew and Gillian amongst others.
Later
I found out that Boy George had come to Jimmy backstage only this very
evening to give him the lyrics and ask him if he would like to sing „Get It
On“ together with him.
After the concert we were able to briefly talk to Sarah Jane Morris and thus we got to know that she and Jimmy hadn't seen each other since 1986. You wouldn't have noticed this at all going by their joint performance. She also told us that she is still an active musician and putting out new songs. Having founded her own label she has got the freedom to write more political songs now.
At home again and still having the sound of Sarah's voice in my ears, I
ordered her latest album „Where It Hurts“ via Amazon and there is
nothing else I can say... except buy, buy, buy!

Da setze ich mich in den Flieger, um Jimmy endlich mal wieder live mit
einer Band erleben zu können. Der letzte Auftritt mit Band, den ich
erleben konnte, liegt mit der „Dare to Love – Tour“ in Köln ja auch
schon 15 Jahre zurück. Und der Weg über den Kanal nach England ins
schöne Seebad Brighton hat sich gelohnt.
Jimmy, Matthew und Gillian war die Begeisterung sichtlich anzumerken.
Und diese Begeisterung sprang auch gleich zu Beginn auf das Publikum
über. Der Saal kochte, als er mit „You make me feel“ begann. Gefolgt von
„Why?“, zu dem die Bläser der Band perfekt
paßten. Den nächsten Song kündigte Jimmy mit den Worten „A little bit
disco never was wrong“ an und gemeinsam mit dem Publikum sang er „Never
Can Say Goodbye“.
Danach war Reggae-Feeling mit „To Love Somebody“
angesagt. Dieser Song gehört zwar nicht zu meinen Lieblingslieder, aber
die Live-Atmosphäre und der Sound der Here&Now - Band vermochten es, mir
eine Gänsehaut zu machen. Bei den ersten Takten von „Smalltown Boy“
waren wieder alle Hände oben und Brigthon zeigte, wie textsicher sie
waren.
Als Nächstes bedankte er sich bei der Band, bei Matthew und Gillian,
wobei Jimmy kurz überlegen musste, bis ihm der Name von Gillian wieder
einfiel und damit für einen kurzen Lacher sorgte. Vom Catering war Jimmy
vielleicht nicht so begeistert und er bedankte sich mit den Worten „thank
you the Catering....brrr gorgeous“ und machte eine Geste, als wolle er
sich übergeben.
„Don´t Leave Me This Way“ folgte und ich wartete sehnsüchtig auf den
Überraschungsgast, der für einige keine Überraschung mehr war, da Sarah
Jane Morris selbst im Facebook postete: „ ... Wer kommt nach Brighton,
um mich und Jimmy live zu sehen.“ Aber wo blieb Sie, Jimmy begann den
Song. Doch von Sarah keine Spur. Als der erste Refrain beendet war,
hatte ich meine Gänsehaut wieder. Auf die Bühne rauschte Sarah Jane
Morris im großen weit ausfallenden weißen Rock und roter Stola. Ich war
begeistert! Nicht nur ihr Auftreten war großartig sondern auch Ihre
Stimme. Sie tanzten beide, als wäre 1986 erst letztes Jahr gewesen. Die
Harmonie zwischen Jimmy und Sarah war sofort wieder da. Der Song ging zu
Ende, Sarah und Jimmy verließen singend die Bühne. Die letzten Akkorde
spielte die Band allein und ich wusste, diese Reise hat sich für mich
gelohnt.
Das Konzert ging weiter und ich war noch gespannt, Boy George als
Abschluss zu sehen.

Du auch schon besser gehört. Aber scheinbar musste sich Herr George erst
warm singen, denn von Song zu Song wurde er besser und hatte auch mich

It On“ und plötzlich bekam ich meine Überraschung.
Boy George holte Jimmy auf die Bühne und sie sangen
das Lied im Duett. Das Publikum rockte mit und wieder war der Saal am
Kochen. Der Backroundchor bestand u.a. aus Sarah Jane Morris, Pepsi &
Shirlie, Matthew und Gillian.
Hinterher erfuhr ich, dass Boy George erst am gleichen Abend zu Jimmy in
die Garderobe kam, um ihm den Songtext zu geben und ihn zu fragen, ob er
mit ihm „Get It On“ singen möchte.
Nach dem Konzert konnten wir kurz mit Sarah Jane Morris reden und so
erfuhren wir, dass sich die Beiden seid 1986 nicht mehr gesehen hatten.
Dem gemeinsamen Auftritt merkte man das überhaupt nicht an. Sie erzählte
uns auch, dass Sie aktuell immer noch Musik macht und veröffentlicht.
Unter Ihrem eigenen Label hat Sie jetzt die Freiheit, auch mehr
politische Texte zu schreiben. Zuhause, noch mit der Stimme von Sarah
Jane Morris im Ohr, bestellte ich mir bei Amazon ihr letztes Album „Where
It Hurts“ und was soll ich sagen... außer kaufen, kaufen, kaufen!
