MYSTÉFY Album "Spark Within" incl. "I Will" with Jimmy Somerville
Jimmy Somerville, whom I’ve known since 1998 was aware I was a jazz vocalist, but he knew me as the PR lady. Over the years we became friends, but he still hadn’t heard me sing. I wasn’t the person to give demos to each and every musician or ‘star’ I came across in my job, in fact, I gave it to no one. However, when I started working on my album I had one duet in mind, and so I plucked up all (ALL!!) my courage, gave a demo to Jimmy, whose unique voice I adore, and casually said: “it’d be great if you and I could sing a duet on my CD – here’s my demo, let me know what you think…”
The next day I got an SMS from Jimmy: “Hey you. Lotte Lenya – you should do some of her german stuff. A whole new audience. Love yer CD…”. Weeks later in the car on a longer mutual trip, I played a “Best Of Dean Martin” CD and that’s when Jimmy and I fell in love with the gorgeous tune “I Will”. Here we were singing away happily at 180 km/h, with me behind the wheel.
One fine summer day, I picked up Jimmy from his hotel, we rehearsed the song two times in the studio, and it was recorded in mere 3 takes and in 20 minutes. Jimmy suggested a Q&A structure in the verse, and I sang 2nd voice in the chorus. We joked and flirted during the making of this duet, living the lyrics of the song in this moment. I had always told Jimmy if I don’t find me a man, we should get married, just to leave the whole world and music biz nonplussed. I think Jimmy was pretty relieved he never had to take on this role after all.”
